Area Agency on Aging (AAA) of Northwestern Ohio, Toledo, OH

Transportation and housing are so important to the Area Agency on Aging of Northwestern Ohio that its homepage includes direct links to intake forms for both services. With funding from the Older Americans Act (OAA) Title III-B, FTA Section 5310, county levy funds for aging services, and Regional Transit Authority funds, the Toledo-based AAA operates a one-call, one-click center, serving as a transportation broker to coordinate rides for older adults and people with disabilities across multiple transportation providers throughout Northwestern Ohio. The AAA has plans for future system upgrades.
In addition, the AAA owns three HUD 202 affordable senior housing properties in the rural parts of its service area; is the minority developer and owner of a 52-unit, 9-percent Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) affordable senior housing project constructed on its headquarters property in 2026; and is in pre-development on another 54-unit, 4-percent LIHTC project. Older adults can call the AAA or visit its website to receive a customized list of housing resources.
The AAA’s employees provide on-site service coordination at multiple properties, including several owned by other organizations, and among their tasks is to coordinate transportation through senior centers and other community transportation resources. In addition, using OAA Title III-B funds, Ohio Housing Trust Funds, and levy funding, the AAA contracts with companies that provide home repairs and modifications for older adults in a 10-county area.
Other funding received by the AAA includes HUD funding for its housing service coordination and CDBG funds for its home-delivered meals program. Currently, to meet match requirements, the AAA braids Section 5310 funds with local levy funding for aging services.
Transportation and housing are just two of many vital services provided by the AAA. These and other wrap-around services like in-home care, family caregiver, kinship, veteran-directed care and volunteer programs work together to support the healthy aging of older adults in their own homes.
